FEATURING: Elkarti Morocco

Posted

A few years ago my sisters set off for an adventure in Morocco and discovered the enchantment of Marrakesh souks. Naturally, I sulked back in Portland as they perused aisles upon aisles of kilim rugs, leather boots, silver, woven tapestries, and well, you name it. Apparently I made my lack of presence known via Skype, as they brought back a gorgeously constructed leather cross-body bag for me! I’m not exaggerating when I say I have worn that bag nearly everyday since, and consequently, it’s the most favored item in my closet.

So, imagine to my delight when we got in our first order from the leather goods brand Elkarti Morocco! Ahmed Abidine, a Portland transplant by way of Morocco founded the ethical fashion line in 2011, which creates one-of-a-kind leather bags and belts (all sourced in Morocco!)– from the leather and tanneries they’re produced in to the artisans who craft them. Elkarti’s mission is to “tell the story and heritage of Moroccan superior craftsmanship while preserving and developing the artisan economy sustainably.”

Extra bonus points: As well as beautiful craftsmanship, Elkarti also invests a third of their profits into programs that help under-served artisans become visible to the world. Beautiful and philanthropic? I think I’m in love.
